In Calculus students take an active role in their own success. They are given multiple chances to teach a class. Sometimes they prepare a presentation on a new topic, and sometimes they explain how to solve a homework problem. I have white boards on two walls, and when it is time to review homework, all of them are covered in formulas. Often, a student start writing a problem down just to discover it has a mistake, so others come to help and they have a heated discussion right there by the board.
